Atlantic pygmy octopus

The Atlantic Pygmy Octopus would make an amazing addition to the Coral Reef exhibit in the Blank Park Zoo. This tiny octopus is unquestionably an interesting invertebrate. We believe this octopus would be loved by the public because of it's small frame and ability to change color.
The Pygmy is a very small octopus, growing up to about 5 1/2 inches in length. Due to it's ability to change color for camouflage, the Pygmy octopus has a very large range of color, however their skin is commonly clear with brown spots. The miniature octopus uses a secret toxin to dissolve the shell of it's favorite meal: clams. The Cayman's are common places to find the Atlantic Pygmy. Although this octopus is tiny, it requires a 20 gallon tank. Because octopi are known to be escape artists, the lid of the little guy's tank needs to be extremely stable. While the Pygmy loves to roam around it's tank and explore, it will also need a few hiding places. Tanks should be filled with rock, plant and cave decor for the octopus to hide in. A high-quality filtration system is definitely recommended, because the Atlantic Pygmy Octopus thrives better in extremely clean water. |
